Nebraska ethanol saves consumers millions each month
Record high oil prices—and low ethanol prices—means ethanol use can save even more money for consumers who want to burn cleaner fuel while supporting Nebraska’s economy.
A surge in ethanol supply and oil skyrocketing above $80 a barrel has reduced the cost of E85 to about 40 cents less per gallon than gasoline. In several Nebraska locations E85 sells for as much as 70 cents below the price of gasoline.
The Nebraska state government is currently considering direct E85 purchases from ethanol producers in an effort to further reduce the state fleet operating costs. Flexible fuel vehicles, which can burn E85, comprise approximately 60 per cent of the state fleet. Consumers can also save money by using E85 when priced to reflect the low cost of ethanol today.
“Consumers are making it clear that ethanol is a more cost efficient, environmentally sound way to save money and promote energy independence,” said Todd Sneller, administrator of the Nebraska Ethanol Board.
Nebraska ’s 40,000 Flex Fuel Vehicle drivers can collectively save over $8 million a year by buying E85 instead of gas, at current prices. A driver who buys E-10, which can run in any car, could save $100 annually. If all gasoline sold in Nebraska was replaced by E10, drivers could collectively save more than $7 million a year at current fuel prices.
“Dollars spent on Nebraska-produced ethanol goes back into Nebraska’s economy. By purchasing E85, Nebraskans can save millions for themselves and that translates to increased economic growth in other sectors as well,” Sneller said. “ Nebraska ethanol production is currently sufficient to replace all gasoline used in the state in the event of a national energy emergency”, noted Sneller.
