A recent study by Creighton University economist Ernie Goss found that the ethanol industry and higher ag commodity prices have boosted the Midwest economy while much of the country faces an impending recession.

Research shows ethanol lowers GHG emissions
Several states are currently evaluating low carbon gasoline standards as a means of reducing greenhouse gases (GHG). Such standards may require that future gasoline blends reduce greenhouse gases by at least 20% over a conventional gasoline baseline. Greater use of ethanol in gasoline is considered the most economic means of reducing GHG emissions to required levels.

Rising energy costs drive up food prices
As corn prices increase, some critics blame higher food prices on ethanol. But a new study reveals that rising energy costs are more to blame than increasing demand for corn for ethanol production. Because raw ingredients like corn comprise only a small fraction of food costs, the cost of energy used to process and transport food impacts prices more drastically than the demand for corn for ethanol production.
“It’s a myth that ethanol is responsible for rising food prices,” said Todd Sneller, administrator of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. “The truth is that food prices are higher because energy prices are higher. The effect of the demand for corn ethanol on the price of food is negligible.”

Nebraska gas prices highest in US
As Nebraska’s gas prices soar to the highest in the United States, drivers can find a little relief for their battered wallets by filling up with ethanol blends like E-10 and E85.
Recent media reports revealed that Nebraska’s average gas price of $3.29 per gallon now ties Hawaii and Michigan for the highest in the country. Experts cite skyrocketing prices for crude oil and the shutdown of gas refineries as cause for rapidly inflating gas prices.

Just the Facts: Ethanol Markets
As Americans are seeking to find the causes of continued high gas prices, many are incorrectly attributing the increases at the pump to the increased spot market price for ethanol. To do so ignores the realities of the ethanol market and the small role the spot market plays.
For instance, the spot market for ethanol represents just 5-15% of the overall ethanol market in the U.S. The vast majority of ethanol is sold on long-term contracts at prices far below spot market levels.
